The Heat Index: Joseph Chilliams & Frsh Waters • OUTSIDE ALL SUMMER (feat. Tru)
The Heat Index is These Days’ hip-hop column showcasing a hot new record we can’t stop playing.
Pivot Gang thrives on the ability to coalesce each member’s singular style into something truly distinctive: Joseph Chilliams' irreverent genius, Frsh Waters' go-getter steelo, MFnMelo's abstract musings, and Saba's storytelling prowess. On paper, the diverse lineup might make it seem difficult to imagine how well they actually complement each other.
However, it's precisely the encouragement of each other's styles and unwavering bond that fuels their creative success as a group.
Joseph and Frsh’s newest joint effort, "OUTSIDE ALL SUMMER," captures the magic that arises from their collective synergy. Set against a kinetic instrumental produced by LetMode, Frsh first vividly portrays his Chicago roots and the crew's current globe-trotting accomplishments. Joseph then takes charge, delivering a catchy chorus that segues into a verse that increasingly veers into the surreal while being pulled by pointed truth-telling and real-life stakes. It even ends with a Teanna Trump shoutout that only he could’ve thought of.
Experiencing this track live at Frsh's sold-out Schubas show in July affirmed its raw energy, exuding bravado throughout. However, the memorable hook also ends with the weighty and grounding line, "I hope I survive this summer.” It’s one of the many moments packed in “OUTSIDE ALL SUMMER" that showcases how these two top-tier rappers, who excel individually, have found common ground through years of lyrical sparring and letting each other cook, resulting in music that unlocks a different dimension in their artistry.
