Physics for Listeners: A Composers’ Concert
Physics for Listeners: a Composers’ Concert is a commissioned concert series that presents new work from Chicago composers spanning contemporary-classical, jazz & improvised, and experimental-rock. With the input of ZRL, Homeroom commissioned four composers to each create a unique composition collaboratively with the trio. The Physics for Listeners selected composers for 2018 are OHMME (Macie Stewart, Sima Cunningham), Ben Lamar Gay, Ayanna Woods, and Sam Scranton.
For this concert, the audience is invited to hear the compositions performed for the first time and join a conversation with the composers and musicians led by Deidre Huckabay. This concert will introduce the audience to this year’s ensemble and composers, their individual styles and approaches, and an exclusive look into the work-in-progress sketches of what will become a vinyl pressing of new, original music released in 2019.
At its core, Physics for Listeners is an exploration of the techniques and approaches of composers from distinct traditions. The program encourages collaboration, experimentation, and dialogue amongst the composers, providing insight into the similarities and differences that define each composer and his or her approach.
