Although it’s always a special time seeing a favorite out-of-town act touch down in Chicago, there’s a certain buzz that fills the city whenever we get to experience a lineup stacked with all local artists, all performing as each others’ support. Kicking off the summer, Groupthink will be performing this Friday at Schubas with the support of Heartgaze and PROM for a night of dance-pop melodies. An unforgettable These Days friendship, we're excited to finally see the electric energies of the three acts together in action. From indie-pop to contemporary reggaeton, Groupthink, Heartgaze, and PROM will be bringing their own distinctive sounds to the stage—forging a unique concert experience for their audience.

Artist Interviews

We recently made our proper introductions to Groupthink and Heartgaze through our 2022 Spring/Summer Chicago Artists To Watch feature. In speaking with the two artists, we got to learn more about their first experiences with music, aspirations, and what led each of them to Chicago.

In preparation for their upcoming show, we caught up with Groupthink and Heartgaze to talk about how they first got connected and what has them most excited for their set.

How did you two first meet?

Groupthink: Eric Montanez introduced us at an artist meetup at his house with Victor and Jared and Josh from Dreamer Data. He had sent me Clem’s music before so I already was a fan but I didn’t want to say anything because I was nervous lmao. But he was super cool and it was awesome to be in that room.

Heartgaze: We met at Eric’s (Montanez) house back in September. A couple of our friends were there, Victor, Jared and Josh from Dreamer Data, and Elliot (Eric's brother) was there for a sec. I remember that Daniel already had the videos ready for “Guilty Pleasure” and “Me and Your Boyfriend” (which I think we watched the latter one, but I might be wrong). We ate pizza and talked, it was cool.

What’s your routine before a show?

Groupthink: I huddle up the whole band and remind them why we do this. Then I deep breathe and try not to talk too much so my voice is rested. Then I pray and then I walk out on stage.

Heartgaze: Usually replay the songs in my head, try and get ready mentally and just get it done. Also, drinking water and every now and then drinking fernet with coke if possible. It helps.

What song are you most looking forward to performing?

Groupthink: “Guilty Pleasure” - I want everyone to see me try to hit those high notes Lmao. Wish me luck.

Heartgaze: An unreleased one <3

I’ve been playing music for maybe five or six years. I’m self taught but before that it was always poetry & writing.

Music has been around forever for me. My family, just everyone, is into music. My dad plays instruments but I started making punk music when I was 12.
