Mick Jenkins • "Spread Love"

Over the last few years Mick Jenkins has been building up to this point. With a series of exceptional projects that began three years ago, Jenkins has been rolling out a worldview, chapter by chapter. In 2013's Trees & Truths, Mick reflects on the inspirations and insights gained while gathering with likeminded individuals and beginning conversations about how the world works. A year later, The Water[s] finds Jenkins completely engulfed in the ocean of emotions, ideas and perspectives this world offers. In the project, which I've long thought was the best rap album of 2014, Mick is embattled by many negative realities, eventually overcoming them with positive and progressive states of mind that serve as breathes of fresh air. By projects end, we feel our protagonist coming out on the other end.

A year ago, the Chicago emcee returned with Wave[s]. A sonic excursion of sorts, the project was less the next chapter of Mick's overarching idea than it was a moment to celebrate the newfound realizations (i.e. Love is the answer) and preparing to apply them to life looking forward. It felt to me like pressing pause on an epiphany, getting to walk into the center of it and looking around. This September, 24th to be exact, Mick will give fans The Healing Component - the long talked about next installment. He prefaces the release with a new Sango-produced single entitled "Spread Love" and the following idea:
