Mick Jenkins • "Pressed For Time"

When it comes to collaboration, we often don't know what we want until it's upon us. Mick taps a contingent of fellow locals on his latest loose single, "Pressed For Time" bringing out well-vetted talent to handle the heavy lifting on both ends of his verses and beyond. Monte Booker's space-toy tinkering on the production side of things is instantly recognizable, and pairs well with the doot-doot vocalizations of THEMpeople. It all flows so well together that you might catch yourself humming for a couple extra bars before breaking out the dictionary over Mr. Jenkins' ruminations.

True to form, Mick's certainly thought these rhymes over for awhile, unconstrained by the perceived pressure of time when it comes to real relationships and speaking his mind. By contrast, at times the rhyme scheme of GoldLink's features seem to march to the beat of the very same drum. But he undoubtedly steps up in closing this track down with dramatic emphasis on the periods and commas, and I won't fault an artist for being consistent when it works. It's been awhile since a track has given me pause before pressing play again. Mick's always good for that.
