PRODUCED BY EG WHITE

Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based Monica Martin gifted unto the universe a new single, “Cruel.”

The midwestern songstress first came to notoriety fronting the indie sensation PHOX, enchanting listeners with Martin’s bewitching voice and deft ability for nonconformist pop songwriting. After the breakup of PHOX, Martin released Awake and Pretty Much Sober in 2017 with producer Violents, before going silent.

Working under Republic Records, “Cruel” is a harbinger of what’s to come on the artist’s solo career debut EP, coming soon. With original production by the Eg White, known for his long rap sheet of pop hits, “Cruel” has the mass appeal of a pop anthem, and the blunt lyrical sincerity of Moni’s writing.

The single, entitled “Cruel,” has been remixed by Chicago’s Peter CottonTale, known for his role as music director to Chance the Rapper, and member of The Social Experiment. The remix takes the sparse, resonant love song to an ethereal plain, with more bells and whistles than the original. The amped up remix features punchier bass hits, a doubled down chorus of vocoder harmonies, and gospel keys in the negative spaces. Keep your eyes on Monica Martin for new music on the horizon.
