Chicago’s West Side is often overlooked by non-natives whose focus is fixed on the South Side’s hard-earned clout. In reality, the West Side has been a major source of influence, spouting talent into Chicago’s hip hop scene for years, and Z Money is among the most influential players. After putting a series of legal battles and setbacks behind him, Z Money moved to Atlanta and got signed to Gucci Mane’s 1017 Eskimo label.

In collaboration with Ohgeesy, breakout member of the up-and-coming Shoreline Mafia group, Z Money recently released a remix of “Givenchy” off his latest album Chiraq Mogul. “Givenchy (Remix)” does not fail to deliver Z Money’s energetic, sing-songy flow over hard, up-tempo, bass heavy tracks, blending elements of Chicago’s famous Bop and Drill.

Cinematic melodic loops twinkle in the background behind sub punches on “Givenchy (Remix).” Heavily influenced by Gucci’s sound, Z Money’s vocals are bouncy and often play out over a hard, minimalist beat. Z Money is an originator of the same monotone whisper that Valee is known so well for now, with the two Chicago rappers currently working on an album.

Z Money and Ohgeesy ramble with precision over hard bass with laid back, faded vocals, a reflection of the age of lean. Both insist that their music is a veritable reflection of their day to day lives, that they really live the lives they rap about. With 37 million views and counting on his hit “Musty,” Oh Geesy’s feature may draw new fans onto Z Money, extending beyond his local celebrity and bringing him into a new spotlight.
