A quick retrospective look into Psalm One's career will yield a catalog built on collaboration, masterful technique and disruptive pieces. Her Bandcamp boasts 12 full-lenght projects with guest-verses from various underground legends and she outraps damn near every single one of them. The best part is that she hasn't shown any signs of slowing down.
DON'T GET LAZY NOW! is her latest EP and it renders an inspired artist at the apex of their skills. There's the mesmerizing anthem, "Thick Thighs Save Lives." The breezy "Kolorblind Ambrosia" with its warm soul sample. And of course there's also the lead single, "NON-BINARY." A no-holds-barred record about inclusivity and representation, it features superb verses from Sophia Eris and fellow Rapper Chicks member, Angel Davanport over Optiks' frenetic beat (who produced the entire EP). ShowYouSuck also makes a special appearance, closing out the track with a laudable statement. The song's video, directed by Grace Hagen, endearingly interprets the song's theme and it's worth 100x its two minutes and 49 seconds runtime.
For over a decade, Psalm One has held a vanguardist role among independent artists. DON'T GET LAZY NOW! is a project created in and for spaces that uplift marginalized people. It's also a reminder that she's still leading the way.
