GreenSllime talks “All Day”
Produced by GreenSLLIME
Directed by Jude Appleby
For the better part of the last decade, GreenSLLIME has earned a reputation in the Chicago hip-hop scene for two things: making beats and smoking weed. After notably working with rappers like Mick Jenkins and Qari, Sllime is starting to spend more time behind the mic. After dropping a string of loose singles in 2019, Sllime started 2020 strong with a new visual ode to his favorite sticky plant, “All Day.”
At the time of the release we caught up with Sllime to talk about the new single and his favorite strains, but we never got around to publish the piece. That is, until today. In celebration of 4/20 and after some internal peer-pressure, we’ve finally released this Q&A for your entertainment.
What’s the story behind the creation of this song? How did the video come together?
I made this song in the infamous 406, a studio we were all working and living out of for years. Got evicted for some bullshit that went down, most people that know me, know me from that space. Any time of day or night it was one big cloud. Video came together cuz as soon as I did the song I was just thinking about my Chevy, I wanted to slam that shit, I got subs in my trunk. I knew this was that cruisin' in my Chevy smoking my weed song. Timing was never really right though I was running around doing so much, once I knew I wanted to drop the song I hit up my homies mike and Jude at 119 because they live close, like yo let’s just get some shots smoking real quick. They were down with it and came through and held me down one time. I wanted to have the video done a long time ago but I started procrastinating editing and just kinda gave up for a few months. With all the weed legalization and shit, it gave me a new boost. I had like an angle for the video now, was gonna release in the first. Ended up getting real real high and procrastinating for like two more weeks. On Distrokid you gotta upload the song days before your release, so I thought the video would come out on the first. So even though it didn’t, the song still did. I didn’t promote it but then mfs kept tweeting it and These Days picked it up and people liked the song so it gave me the energy to complete the video. Sat my ass down and finished in a few hours.
You’ve been releasing a lot more tracks lately where you’re actually spitting. What’s your approach to rapping compared to your approach to producing?
They are both pretty similar and in how they are initially created. I would describe it as minimal effort, I hate listening to shit that sounds like mfs were trying hard as hell. This shit ain’t a fuckin decathlon lol. I don’t want to hear that shit. Whenever something comes right out of me, I hold a way higher value of it than something I tinkered with for weeks. I give up at that point just because it sounds fake to me now. Beats, I make in 5-10 minutes —they are done and they stay like that. Rhymes usually come out in a freestyle to the beat and I just run with whatever flow I liked while freestyling. I do more tinkering with words but I still believe in the same method of minimal effort. I don’t really want to employ a lot of like tricks and loopholes to the flow, I just try to be slow and deliberate and say some shit hard.
The pack you flaunt in the video is of OG Ghost. Would you say you have preferences with strains or are you a “weed is weed” guy?
That was all organic CBD LOL. Nah, I love all weed let me say that. I love trying new strains, different bud for different times and places. I love sativa, I love indica and I love hybrids. I will say this though —I need an indica on deck. I can smoke weed all day, but when night time comes, there’s only one. That strong indica. Big OG smoker. I love OG always have, always will. At night I need to be PUT DOWN like a wild animal just in order to sleep for like 4 hours lol
Why should people invest in greenSLLIME, the artist and the person?
Because I’m real as fuck, I’ve been out here and I’m not a piece of shit. Whether u want raps, beats, funny ass videos, I got you. Ima always keep it too real .
