LowLife: Chicago's Duo of Dreamers
Photography by Timmy Risden
Amongst the city’s ever-growing sea of emerging talent is LowLife, who gave us the exceptional SUKRPNCH back in July. The project offers a dreamy, sedated feeling with songs like “GREEN AND BLUE” and “DUO”. The group, consisting of artists $aint Duewwy & Tyrellly, has been making noise and paving a way for their own sound for the past few years. From collaborations with artists like MALX, madamestarlet and Kaicrewsade, to spectacular performances at Bookclub, Reggies and Boxville; these two are trailblazers in the scene. Tune in and turn it up.
Thank you both for connecting with us. To start off, where are you two from?
We are from the west (Ty) and south side (Saint) of Chicago
What’s the backstory behind the name, “LowLife”?
Ty: Yea, for some odd reason I really like using the words that people used against me to hate on me and wear it and just be better than that and one day I just so happened to play “lowlife” by Lucki and I called saint and was like “yea… this us”
How did you two first get into music, and what made you take it seriously?
We both early on liked music and arts, Our story together began more towards the second half of niggas lives though. We started taking it seriously when people were just rocking with our dynamic for the most part.
How would you describe the difference between releases under “LowLife” and your own individual aliases, “$aint Duewwy” and “Tyrellly”?
Saint: LowLife is what it’s like to be one, I guess just an oddball of sorts fasho; But said in another way then before. $aint Duewwy shit is Saint Duewwy shit. Life of a nomad.
Ty: LowLife is just a clash of both of our worlds combined. I feel like we both tackle being a lowlife IRL so differently that when you listen to our music you can get a taste of what it’s like from two totally different perspectives. I know for me personally i like to dig into feeling alienated by ppl around me, crashing out, falling in love with toxicity, and finding myself through drugs. It’s a lot of dark themes but I try to hide it behind colorful sounds.
Is there anyone or anything that inspires your art?
Frank ocean, 3 stacks…
Saint: Other art, the people I have experienced in my life, animation shit like that
Ty: My art is purely inspired by all my own personal experiences and the people around me. My work is more like a diary if anything.
What’s your favorite thing about the Chicago music scene at this moment?
Just seeing everyone’s work finally paying off!
Can you describe to us what a “LowLife” studio session looks like?
Ty: a lot of smoke and vibes for real
Who are some artists within the scene that you want to work with?
B2, Bsquared!!
The work you’ve done with Director Dyepa has been nothing less than brilliant. How did that relationship come to be?
Dylan actually knew a friend of ours before we met. Our friend put him on to us and put us on to him and eventually asked him to shoot bts for a vid that never happened but he still managed to get some good shots so we ended up asking him to shoot a full vid and been locked in ever since.
What’s the first songs you would recommend to someone who hasn’t heard your music yet?
DREAM, 222, PINTS…
Saint: and all of our solo shit lol
What’s a bit of advice you would tell a new artist entering the Chicago music scene?
Ty: don’t fall into the trap of only wanting to work with people who already have something going on! Work with people who want to help see you grow and have the same goals as you because you never know with a little time next thing you know all your friends are the next music scene.
Saint: be you only one you.
