Meek Mill's name has dominated the Philly scene for a minute now, but a new Philadelphia rapper is starting to make waves going by the name of Lil Uzi Vert. If you have any interest in the steelier side of street raps, or simultaneously fan of rock or rock stars, you’ll want to investigate Philly’s latest phenomenon.

Essential Listens

Symere "Lil Uzi Vert" Woods hails from North Philly's Francisville neighborhood. Blessed with rapid burst flow that's as catchy as it is deadly, the name came as quickly as his firey raps. First rapping only for the block, Uzi's name rang out far beyond the city limits following the well received release Luv Is Rage and his appearance on Carnage's smash "WDYW". I'm new to the party and while disappointed with myself, am glad to finally be in the know of this artist who's unique style flies in every direction.

His music is grity but fun incarnate and you can feel the dirt under your fingers. Just listen to the squelching beat on "JuiceMan", produced by Bobby Kritikal and DJ Plugg. Reminiscent of It's a Scary Site era Fredo Santana, incoming. His music has a bite to it, and the beats almost sound alien (see “Motorola” produced by Metro Boomin’). The same can be said for his voice; it’s a rubber band, and nowadays nothing can take you futher like a unique vocal delivery. Lil Uzi Vert's voice travels miles, from Young Thug squeaks to DMX barks and Fetty Wap croons. Instead of the usual autotune, Uzi implements bizarre filters, blasting his voice out of this galaxy and returning with a syrupy flow that sneakily drips over his beats.

Fans of the burgeoning Philly rap scene, fans of anthems, fans of artists taking their own lane, make sure to check out Lil Uzi Vert's essential listens and if you approve, his Luv Is Rage project as well.
