Formally introducing himself to the world with his debut project, Goody invites us to celebrate life and the challenges that come with it in 21 (To Anyone). Running through general themes behind a young adult’s day-to-day: taking early classes, working double shifts and partying, the ‘tape standouts with the aid of the local emcee’s eagerness to share his views on life as a minority striving for success while living in present-day America.
Prior to its release, the album’s promotional roll-out was led by two impressive videos that shed light on the cinematic approach taken by Goody when he is in the studio recording. The outcome is this compilation of 11 songs that flow extremely well from beginning to end even as they each take on the task of showing a specific range of emotions and personal qualities.
There’s a proper foundation built on thoughtful songwriting and delivery (sticking to my vision, trying not to fall victim to a category of a young black statistic) that is underwhelmed by the lack of a unique sound that matches his vision. That’s why I personally can’t help to look forward to his next body of work, which should find him in a more polished audible lane of his own. Nonetheless, 21 contains enough promising moments to make it worthy of your time and support. If you want to understand why people are excited for what Goody’s artistic future entails, you must begin with this ambitious project and its blemishes. Listen below.
