Kweku Collins • Grey

Closed Sessions artist Kweku Collins’ new album Grey is here. Now toting a third body of work, the nine track collection has only three features. Kweku of course producing the entire project, finds himself closer to the psychedelic intricacies he’s shown more of this year. Sonically this isn’t necessarily new for him. His approach vocally is where I’m finding more instances of change in this regard. With fellow Closed Sessions artist Kipp Stone, Kweku’s distorted voice drags over the beat, as if he were T-Pain in a Dinosaur Jr. cover band in “Things I Know." He isn’t afraid to take a risk. I like to think the overall message, however communicated, is more important to him.

In “Youaintshit” featuring Sylvie Grace, Kweku takes more of a poetic stance. Pittering over lightly plucked strings, he invokes a certain imagery. Only someone who’s outgrown a loved one can truly understand this as it’s not exactly apparent who he’s addressing. It’s nice to see how far he’s come with music. Everything feels natural, delivery, word choice, vocal layering. His subject matter often being human interaction gives me the sense the music is a reaction to something that actually happened. Insanely personal as it feels, Kweku doesn’t shy from showcasing pure skill as a rapper. Effortless is a great way to put it, especially on his track with Allan Kingdom.

Grey is an amazing start to the year for Kweku and Closed Sessions. Very much looking forward to what opportunities this project brings Kweku's way.
