Hailing from the Northwest side of the city, J.Solaye is an emerging singer with a disarmingly tender voice that can sway anybody into a daydream.
Today, we're premiering the official video for her song "Ocean" off her debut E.P., One.
Directed by Heart of the City —J.Solaye and the crew headed out to California and shot a warm-toned and breezy video that compliments the song's slow-groove styling. Can you talk about the decision of actually making the trip to L.A. to shoot "Ocean?"
Essentially we ended up in this Airbnb in Long Beach, and we needed to be in L.A., so we were super far from where we thought we were going, but actually closer to where we needed to be. Getting out there was the hard part because we brainstormed everything and had a good idea of where we wanted to shoot, all the scenery, and the story we wanted to tell. We went there prepared, so it was more so getting on the plane and finding all of the gems we had looked up.
How long were you guys out there?

We were out there for a week. I thought we would film for the first couple of days. Then a lot of things that you cannot account for happened [...] I think the craziest moment of the whole week was having this rental car, driving around for two and a half hours and everybody would just be kind of frustrated, We were like "let's just pull over, regroup and chill out—we'll find a place." I went to the bathroom, I had to meditate and breathe. We continued driving and finally found the perfect spot. We finally start shooting, Jacob [of HOTC] takes off all his equipment...and two busses full of touristy kids from Spain get out [laughs].
Why did you guys decide to shoot "Ocean" as your first video?
I decided when I realized that the song resonated with me a lot. It's a story in itself, so to be able to recreate that vision was awesome. It's the most detailed song on my project.
This song is from an EP that's already out, looking ahead, are you working on anything?
Yeah, just working on a couple of singles and then right back at it with a new project. I want every project to be different and have its own unique sound. Whatever that might be. Testing the limits of what I can do as an artist.
