Round Up • New Releases From MFn Melo, Wheatie, Sterling LaVelle & More
Each week the These Days staff comes across great music from Chicago artists that we could not provide individual features for. In an effort to keep our readers up to date with more of our recent favorites, the Round Up segment provides quick summaries and additional noteworthy content. Check out our latest picks below and feel free to submit a comment if you feel we missed something.
DB3 • "Godzilla"
I've been a fan of DB3's style for some time. He offers an unusual delivery and can rap his ass off. Most of his releases come as loose tracks and small collections of music that he records and immediately publishes online, and today's drop is no different. DB3 has been serving up new music as part of a series called Studio Fun. In the series latest edition, DB3 and producer DJ XRATED rise from the depths of the sea to destroy a Japanese city in "Godzilla". DB3 may be laying in the cut chillin, but don't forget about him becuase he's a monster. Be on the lookout for his next tape #teenageSUPERHEROS sometime later this year.
Jaymal Green (Ft. Taylor Bennett) • "Never Find Another"
R&B singer Jaymal Green recruits Taylor Bennett for the passionate but inspirational "Never Find Another". The composition of the song is forever changing which keeps its fresh and unexpected. Taylor Bennett’s rapid tongue twister lyrics really stand out as Jaymal Greens vocals soar in the background. You won't ever find another collaboration like this.
MFn Melo • "Survival"
Growing up in Chicago, the word 'survival' tends to take on a different sensibility, at least that's the message behind PIVOT Gang and westside native MFN Melo's latest single that bears the weight of that word on the title. Released earlier this week, the track served as a welcome return for an act that had spent the winter months hibernating in creativity, ready to pounce once the sun was out.
Sterling LaVelle (Ft. Hugo Lee) • "Maybe"
Sterling LaVelle dims the lights with his new joint "Maybe". Accompanied by Hugo Lee, this heavily jazz inspired track is complete with a soft but rhythmic tone and a sexy pan flute lick you can’t possibly resist.
theWHOevers (Ft. Chris Spencer) • "You're My Boy Blue"
Chicago’s super duo’s, theWHOevers and Chris $pencer, finally link up for "You’re My Boy Blue". Feeling like an crossover episode from some 90’s cartoons, the quartet collides in the most delightful manner imaginable. At the moment, theWHOevers are still teasing their untitled double disc album. No release date in sight just yet, but in the meantime take some time to hang out with your boy Blue.
Wheatie • "Told Ya"
Fresh off his collaboration EP with Sunny Woodz, Wheatie releases a brand new track and video for "Told Ya". I was actually really hoping this track would be longer so I would have to stop replaying it every two minutes, but short and sweet works too. If you’re not a fan of great Chicago rap (then really what are you doing here?), you can at least hit play below to see a cameo from the cutest dog ever in a rap video.
