Premiere • My Gold Mask: "Insomnia (Ando Remix)"

Following the March release of their Anxious Utopia album and preceding the limited edition vinyl re-release this Thursday, My Gold Mask and producer Ando have come together to remix the project's singles, "Insomnia". Not new to the world of remixing their music, My Gold Mask and Ando, also from Chicago, have put an experimental and ambient spin on the already very hot record.

Embracing Gretta's distinct vocals like they've been a match from the jump, Ando's production sets a music more peaceful and ironically sleep inducing tone. Not that you'll want to take a nap listening to this remix, in fact you'll likely want to stay up playing it over and over, but the calming effects of this remix are unexpected in a song called "Insomnia". Constantly breaking down genre barriers with the approach to their craft, My Gold Mask are innovators and have established a lane all their own to push the envelop with like minded individuals such as Ando.

In addition to the new record, we had the opportunity to chat with Gretta and Jack of My Gold Mask below about their time together, Anxious Utopia, and non-music related plans for the summer among other things. Get to know the pair a little better below and be sure to catch up with past releases via the group's Bandcamp

Who is My Gold Mask and how long have you been making music together?

My Gold Mask is Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo. We've been making music together as MGM since 2009 when we both wanted to challenge ourselves as artists and songwriters.  We both picked up new instruments, tried new things and explored ourselves musically. Behind the scenes we've been helped along the way by talented people like producers Balthazar de Ley and Sanford Parker as well as drum / synth player James Andrew.

You just released a new album Anxious Utopia this past March. For those who haven't heard it yet, what is general concept of the album?

The themes of the album are all centered around personal struggles and coping with social anxieties. But it's all within the framework of dance pop mixed with experimental or even post punk influences. Dance your troubles away.

"Insomnia" was originally featured on Anxious Utopia, what inspired you to give it a remix?

We like 'Insomnia' because out of all the songs it really highlights the juxtapositions of the album. It starts out intimate and self reflective and winds up morphing into a party banger to invite all your insomniac friends to. We think the remix by Ando gives it a playful and dreamy vibe that still fits the subject well. We've been into Brandon's music since we first heard THE-DRUM and love what he did with it.

You have a pretty strong history of releasing remixes to a lot of your music. How does that come about? Do you work directly with someone of these producers, or are people just flipping your songs and sending them to you?

It works lots of different ways. Many times we reach out and ask artists and producers who are doing something dope that we love. Sometimes someone will approach us. It's fun for us to hear something that started out as our song get mixed up from a totally different perspective and become something new.

How are you all spending your summer? When you're not working on your music, what are you doing?

When we're not playing shows, writing new songs or working on something music related then we're just kinda being big dorks. Jack loves comics, horror movies and drinking tropical drinks out in the sun. Gretta is big time into studying wine, spoiling our pug Roadie and finding new music to dance in her underwear to.
