Premiere: Fiti • 'Super Senior'

By definition, a “super senior” is one who, due to their lack of effort, attendance and at times academics, by consequence must repeat their senior/last year once more. This metaphor is set in a parallel universe where young Fiti has to relive his previous year(s) of struggle once more. The mixtape is a short but to the point collage of his subsequent projects in which Fiti must “redo” all of his recent obstacles-only this time now bitter and numb. Just as a super-senor is forced to “repeat” the same courses and lectures over, Fiti now shows indignation and resentment at memories that once brought him pleasure: a toxic and turbulent relationship which endured the loss of a child, being kicked out of his home and the self conflict of turning into the man he promised his mother he would never become-his father. This and much more would be the core sound of the debut project from Fiti and friends. Over progressive hip-hop instrumentals mostly created by KAAM, (one part Fiti-the composer and second part Dewey-the producer) we are taken through a trip in the mind of an introvert, the interlude in to the “Super Senior”

No one wants to do the same work twice. While it's an obvious feeling just about anyone can relate to, at time the day-to-day grind necessary for making it today can feel like the movie Groundhog Day, an endless loop of monotonous activities all layered towards a singular dream. That's the sentiment at least on the new from local product Fiti who arrives today with a TheseDays premiere of his latest collection, Super Senior which builds on his previous work by looking to expound upon existing motifs and arrangements.

It seems as though just about everyday we find a new act coming out of some corner of the city or surrounding metropolis and this one comes bundled with a cross-section of the city on several levels. Contributing the base-line production throughout on this one is somewhat newcomer, K.A.A.M. who is a definite bright spot throughout the eight track offering and piqued my ears with a few out-of-the-box meanderings. Also helping out on the beats are the magnificent Drew Mantia and Zepfire and DVN Beats, all of whom come together here to help propel Fiti into a new stratosphere of sonic work. Fiti's work is at times dark, brooding and somewhat misunderstood, but it tells a unique story that he has been apt to discover and package into this release. While this is our first peek at what Fiti and his squad have in store, if it's any indication of what's to come, we'll certainly be listening. Check out the full project above and stay tuned for plenty more from Fiti!
