I remember being sixteen and feeling like my looks did not measure up to the beauty queens in the magazines or my super popular friends. I´m 21 now and still have those feelings; it's completely normal and apart of transitioning. Beach Bunny’s ¨Prom Queen” is a validation of the same teen and twenties angst I’ve come to accept. From lyrics to visuals, ¨Prom Queen” is both the self doubt haunting over your shoulder and the self assurance telling you to relax.

The visuals begin in a laundromat where the lead singer stumbles across a magazine featuring a conventionally pretty woman. The lyrics reveal wanting to conform to conventional beauty standards then transition to countering those ideals. The video includes satirical frames of the lead singer dressed in a long blonde wig, red lipstick, and a prom dress. It ends with her singing in her regular clothes, which also signifies non-conformity. ¨Prom Queen¨ is a big fuck you to unrelenting beauty standards and pick me up screaming ¨Be yourself¨!
