Krystal Metcalfe • "Fearless"
A few weeks ago Billboard knocked Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” off their Hot Country Chart for highly dubious reasons. X quickly issued a rebuttal in the form of a remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus which promptly skyrocketed the single to the #1 spot in the country. But Billboard’s fumbling of the classification highlighted the importance of black people reclaiming the yeehaw agenda. “Fearless” by Krystal Metcalf is an addition to the repossession of the genres and innovative ideas that belong to black folk. The single is a mixture of rock-n-roll guitar chords and a country snarl in Krystal’s soulful voice. It is essential for black artists to take back the culture, and artists like Metcalf are silencing that erasure.
