Round Up • New Releases From Frank Leone, Win and Woo, Ju & More

Each week the These Days staff comes across great music from Chicago artists that we could not provide individual features for. In an effort to keep our readers up to date with more of our recent favorites, the Round Up segment provides quick summaries and additional noteworthy content. Check out our latest picks below and feel free to submit a comment if you feel we missed something.

Frank Leone (Ft. Femdot) • "Hometown Heroes Freestyle"

Frank Leone's first new release of the year comes as "Hometown Heroes Freestyle", a collaboration with the up and coming Femdot and support of the King Supertramp Chamber Orchestra. Keeping it loose and organic, Frank and Fem each take a stab at Frank and the Orchestra's blend of live instrumentation and digital sounds. All artists involved are sure to have plenty more on the way this year, this is just the warm up. In fact, make sure to watch Femdot's video for "Soul" if you haven't already, it's crazy good.

Ju • "Funeral"

Chicago’s own Ju has been making waves in the city with his solo work lately, releasing a series of tracks that mark his departure from the indie-electronic duo that we used to know as Moon & Ju. 2016 was a big year for him as he came back from a brief hiatus, and after hearing "Funeral", we expect 2017 to be no different. The song, which features production by Zach Farache, was Ju’s first release of the new year. He continues to breach the barriers of your typical genre ideologies, creating a sound that comes across as raw and unfiltered. Ju creates a sound that lies somewhere between a garage-band singer and grungy hip-hop artist; he never shies away from expressing his feelings and truly emoting through his music.

Meech (Ft. SL) • "No Doubt"

The artist formerly known as Demetrius G switches up the name, but the raps are just as good if not better! Now known as Meech, the Chicago emcee releases his first in a while, and it seems as though people were waiting on it. With one listen you'll get why "No Doubt" has been received so well since its initial release. Featuring SL and produced by Mic Lee, "No Doubt" is a sign of good things to come for Meech.

Mojek • "Bingo"

Mojek has a new single out, and it’s not to be missed. Ever since he stormed onto our radar (and well before that), Mojek has been consistent in releasing new house, dance, hip-hop, and experimental tracks. He certainly keep his audience on their toes with his short but sweet productions, but you can always count on him to release new music to add to his robust body of work. So it’s no surprise that this Chicago based creative has released yet another single titled "Bingo". "Bingo" doesn't stray from the quality we're used to, and it provides us with an update on what Mojek has been working on lately. It’s more of a down-tempo track, compared to the dance // juke backbone that he has become locally renowned for. In "Bingo", Mojek partners cynical verses with his dark, verging on sinister production. Don’t miss this track, and as always, continue to stay up to date with Mojek.

The Holy Kit (Ft. Warhol.ss) • "FWM"

Consistent with his previous releases, The Holy Kit kicks off the year with another trap banger called "Can’t FWU". This time he collaborates with another local favorite, Warhol.ss, to create a song that you won’t want to miss. The Holy Kit and Warhol.ss move back and forth quickly between verses, rapping energetically over a comparatively relaxed beat produced by Big Emm. We’re always excited to hear who The Holy Kit will work with next, and after a collab as smooth as this one, we can only expect similar partnerships in the future. Listen to "Can’t FWU" above and let it tide you over until The Holy Kit’s next release.

Win and Woo (Ft. Molly Moore) • "Killer With a Smile"

After releasing a solid base of remixes and mashups throughout the past couple of years, we’re currently witnessing Chicago based producers Win & Woo develop their own sound within the local electronic music scene. Following the release of their debut single "Recognize" this past September, this dance scene duo are finally following up as they bring us this new jam "Killer With A Smile". The song features aspiring, L.A. based songstress Molly Moore on vocals, who croons alongside Win & Woo’s infectious beat. Abounding percussion flows into light piano riffs, which pave the way for Moore’s vocals; together making it nearly impossibly to sit still and listen to this track. Sometimes we may forget that Chicago is home to not only a vast and unique hip-hop culture, but also to a massive underground dance music scene. Luckily, producers like Win & Woo make that impossible to overlook.
