If ever one were to look for a soothing ‘trap’ lullaby, one would need to look no further than Englewood and Chatham native, James Cam’ron’s latest single, “Rick James Cam’ron.” The unexpected single features the Chicago rapper sing-rapping over a smooth melody. Every time the listener expects the song to pick up and veer off into a more bass-heavy hook, the rapper surprises you by remaining steadfast with his cadence and delivery. Somehow, the song manages to be soothing and engagingly kinetic at the same time.
The surprising single demonstrates the rapper’s versatility and showcases a different set of skills than the ones he showed on his previous single, the more energetic, in-your-face and dance-able "6(666)". This track, produced by Rikkie 2991, allows the rapper to feature a softer side and sound while continuing to show off his skills as a lyricist. By the end of the song, it would appear to the listener that the artist has created a whole new category of Chicago hip hop - the trap opera.
Ultimately, “Rick James Cam’ron” shows that listeners should expect the unexpected as James Cam’ron continues to grow and evolve in his craft, all the while pushing the boundaries of Chicago hip hop sound.
