PRODUCED BY SON!

Chicago stole another artist from the Isthmus of Madison, WI. Daniel Kaplan’s musical ambitions are collaborative and catalytic, his sound borderless. Writing and performing under his most recent moniker, Son!, Kaplan has gone off the handle, creatively speaking. Born in Los Angeles, raised in North Carolina, schooled in Wisconsin, Son! has set down in Chicago, for now.

Kaplan’s latest efforts push beyond his days of trapping with BoatHouse and Yung Simmie. Reared among the ranks of the prestigious First Wave cohort of Madison, known for its constant outpouring of talent in interdisciplinary scholarship, hip hop, and poetry, Kaplan began blurring the lines of hip-hop and indie rock, taking an interest in music theory, developing as an instrumentalist, and producing his own tracks.

“All Good Things” is the latest from Son!, whose amoebic sound is an amalgamation of styles, a synthesis of self-love, a disregard for the lines between this and that genre.  The self-produced track sounds like a DIY bedroom cut, but for someone who’s gotten too good at production to be labeled as bedroom. The track considers the rings of sobriety and lack thereof, and the nuances of building love with another. Keep tabs on Son!, as you will be seeing more of the artist, no doubt; A genre-bending wildcard, liable to be in collusion with your favorite rapper, or your favorite indie-rock band.
