Brittney Carter • Side A: Hooligan / Side B: Breakthrough
For her TheseDays debut, Brittney Carter has graced us with two new singles that best exemplify why she’s one of the most promising young artists in Chicago. Bundled-up into a two-pack, here Brittney underlines her skills as a focused and introspective writer.
On “Hooligan,” the emcee leans on a breezy piano melody to guide her as she speaks on her faith, city, struggles with regular 9-to-5s and aspirations. The sum of it all can be overwhelming, but Brittney finds in her music the perfect remedy to center herself. “If I ain’t got nobody to talk to while I’m feeling awful, I relax and know it’s not the end I grab my pen, problem solved,” she raps in the hook, alluding to the relief that comes with shaping her thoughts into rhymes.
For Side B, entitled “Breakthrough,” Brittney brings back to focus the intersection between her dreams and religion. Her belief in God has helped her persevere bouts with depression and setbacks while diligently working on her craft. This has led to imposing confidence and an undeniable skill set. Its most memorable line — "Every time I spit, it’s like a little piece of heaven” —encapsulates her theology and why you need to keep her in your radar this 2019.
