News RoundUp • Vic Mensa Freestyles on Ebro, Chance Stops By Colbert & More
Every so often we comb through the news and happenings around the city and, well, round it all up for you here in our News RoundUp. This time around we're admittedly heavy on the SaveMoney but it's hard not to these days/ Joey Purp did his thing at The Metro, Vic continued on a hot streak with a freestyle on Ebro that preceded a wild weekend in NYC and Chance joined Skrillex in helping to refresh the way Stephen Colbert delivers his monologue. All that and more on the latest RoundUp from the TheseDays team.
Joey Purp Packs Out The Metro
Fresh off the release of his latest project, iiiDrops, Joey Purp hosted an all=ages show at The Metro and proved why he's the next up to ascend from the SaveMoney Crew. His hair back in a ponytail and a pair of old school locs over his eyes he looked every bit the part as he weaved in and out of album cuts and long-worn favorites. Joining him early on in the show was Peter CottonTale, Greg "Stix" Landfair and Carter Lang joined DJ and producer Knox Fortune in a memorable ensemble that took the set in an interesting new direction for the long-dormant headliner.
Fat Tiger Releases New Items
Just last week, one of our favorite local fashion operations dropped a small collection of spring/summer attire to get you through these summer months. Adding some colors into the mix, Fat Tiger Workshop drops off a pair of new t-shirt syles in a handful of colorways and some extremely fresh raincoats with the embroiderd tiger on the chest. All of Fat Tiger pieces move quickly, but those jacktes aren't likely to survive the weekend, so act fast. You can pick up everything in store (1043 W. Grand) or online at www.fattigerworkshop.com
Vic Mensa Freestyles on Ebro and LA Leakers, Talks New Album
With Chance and then Joey releasing projects in subsequent weeks, the end of May and beginning of June appear to be Vic Mensa's turn as the Roc Nation signee offered up the long-awaited project and label debut, There's A Lot Going On and subsequently took off on a press tour that has seen his image plastered all across the Internet. Fittingly, Vic visits Hot97's Ebro in the Morning and the LA Leakers among others to offer up a freestyle and a little more insight on the project which has essentially positioned him as the similarly open-minded, but far-reachingly more abrasive version of his Chicago counterpart. Without furthermore, we give you Mr. Mensa at his finest.
Chance The Rapper & Skrillex Make Colbert Show Appearance
Chance The Rapper is starting to feel right at home in late night, as he stopped by The Colbert Show for the second time this year to take part in the host's monologue alongside Skrillex before performing with the vaunted producer/DJ and Hundred Waters for their collaborative single, "Show Me Love".
Chance & Skrillex have been friends for a minute now, dating back to the pairs collaborations in 2014 and regular photos together over the years. Arriving at my old house this past New Year's Eve around 2 AM, the pair was actually standing on the porch after playing the NYE show at the Allstate Arena, if that underlines it in a more local sense. Teaming up with Colbert, the pair remixed his monologue about cereal, with Skrillex taking care of the beat via his handheld device while Chance delivered grin-inducing happy rhymes. The pair's performance alongside Hundred Waters definitely added a lot to the largely uninspired vocals of front-woman Nicole Miglis as Skrillex rocked out on an accenting electric guitar, a hark back to his early days in the metal scene while Chance added some life with a fun guest verse. It seems you can find Chance just about everywhere these days, who knows where he'll pop up next.
