Gifting the world with two unannounced singles, vintage Chance is back and delivering a much needed light hearted track. Cutting through the dreariness that is the beginning of Chicago winter is Chance the Rapper’s signature optimism and positivity. If you’ve been around long enough to experience the young rappers beginnings, you’ll definitely feel a little sentimental for the past. Chance pays tribute to his beginnings and encapsulates his 10 Day sound into “My Own Thing”. This song brings about nostalgia for the beginning, and pairing with other Chicago native and long time friend, Joey Purp, who lends the song a vibe so uniquely Chicago.

From the light staccato piano notes in the beginning to Chance’s signature ad libs in the back on top of some layered harmonies, you can’t help but be reminded of young Chano and take pride in the evolution of his artistry. It’s nice to hear a usually so self-effacing Chance express his confidence in himself and his sound, possibly in reference to his highly anticipated upcoming album.

“My Own Thing” is a chill and refreshing song, highlighted even more so with Joey Purp’s flow. Overall, a nice throwback to his 10 Day era combined with his Coloring Book style, an upbeat flow just in time for the holidays.
