James Cam'ron (Ft. Ug Vavy) • "Wavy Shit"
James Cam’ron is on a quest to show fans that he has conquered virtually every form of hip hop while still pushing the boundaries of the musical genre. After gifting us with a ‘trap’ lullaby in the form of the single ‘Rick James Cam’ron,’ the self-proclaimed Phantom of the Trap Opera drops ‘Wavy Shit,’ featuring and produced by UG Vavy. The title and the song are self-explanatory - the artist takes on the sub-genre of hip hop made popular by rappers Max B and Wiz Khalifa among others. The style is where the rapper sings while (or in addition to-) rapping. James Cam’ron’s wave melds the operatic drama he featured on ‘Rick James Cam’ron’ with a bass-heavy beat and his energetic flow to create a unique dance-able hit.
James Cam’ron is “more focused on building a vibe than bars.” He wants to “rap and still dip into less aggressive genres at the same time.” ‘Wavy Shit’ is the latest of three singles the Englewood and Chatham native has put out, showcasing his talented lyricism and uncanny ability to adapt his flow to every beat. On the surface, ‘Rick James Cam’ron,’ ‘No Chaser’ featuring Angel Davenport and now ‘Wavy Shit’ are all wildly different singles. And yet, all three singles are united by showcasing James Cam’ron’s willingness to take risks; demonstrating the rapper’s versatility; all the while revealing that this multifaceted artist will continue to push the boundaries of hip hop.
On ‘Rick James Cam’ron,’ the artist surprised listeners with a single that could not be categorized and seemingly developed a new sub-genre - the trap opera. With ‘Wavy Shit,’ he shows that he is willing to put out a song that fits into an existing category, only when he can elevate the sound with his distinctive lyrical style and flow. On ‘Wavy Shit’, he encourages fans to “get up on [his] wave” and they should because there is clearly no telling where the artist’s musical pursuits will take him - or his fans - next. He is still carving out his space in the Chicago hip hop scene and his evolution is both exciting and fun to watch.
