Wemmy Hassan, better known by his stage name WemmyMo, is quickly rising in visibility as Chicago seems to finally be done snoozing on the young artist’s debut mixtape, Bittersweet (2018) which dropped at the beginning of last summer. The Uptown, Chicago native recently released a video for one of the tracks off of Bittersweet, “Holy Vibes II.” Shot and edited by D.Roe, the video raises the curtain to the precarious prospect of trust in relationships, and the messy, forbidden fruit of wanting someone who is taken.

Wemmy explores the metaphorical implications of romantic half-stepping in the video. The few inches that separate Wemmy from his lover in their bed are made to seem like miles with the presence of her real boyfriend on the other side. “I guess I overthink too much, thinking that I got it when they finally broke up…”

“Holy Vibes II” brings the tested, hybrid sound of Chicago Hip-hop; a washed out guitar sample swells in waves over the slow, deep current carried underneath by the bassline. Soulful melodies and poet-rapper lyricism point to Chicago tradition, influenced by the success of artists like Kweku Collins and Chance who employ this sound that is unmistakably Chicago.

Snowballing some impressive steaming stats, Wemmy’s “Misunderstood” is now at 1.88 million plays on Soundcloud. He also managed to squeeze onto Lyrical Lemonade’s list of “Top 50 Chicago Projects.” It is safe to say we will be hearing more from WemmyMo in 2019.
