“Love is for lovers and old men who know when to fold in . . .”

“Dead and Gone” is the latest track from DRAMA, the Chicago-based duo comprised of vocalist Via Rosa and producer Na’el Shehade. It’s the second single released by the two since 2018’s Lies After Love EP, their sophomore project.

Their music usually touches on the darker side of romantic love, a subject Rosa - who also serves as DRAMA’s lyricist - is well-versed in. If their themes are somber, their sound almost never is. Theirs is the kind of music that’s simultaneously suited for solemn couch reflection and entranced nightclubbing. It’s a blending of vibes that works surprisingly and consistently well.  “Dead and Gone” is no different.

The song’s lyrics read as a warning to young hearts, “You better find someone to trust when you’re dumb and young before you’re dead and gone.” Rosa’s words come to the listener as if spoken by an elder beyond her years, someone who’s been down that road and has the scars to prove it. Each verse is dripping with regret and frustration. Regret at not prioritizing finding “someone to trust” when she had the chance, frustration at her inability to get through to a listener who won’t heed her. Throughout, Shehade’s production both highlights the emotion in Rosa's grounded vocals and displays the pair's tonal duality.
