Hurt Everybody Sells Out Reggies, Brings Out Special Guests

December 21, our November cover story and local hip-hop trio Hurt Everybody played for an enthusiastic sold out crowd at Reggies Rock Club. Playing the show with no support acts, Hurt had plenty of time to bring out special guests including Twista, Mick Jenkins, Logan, Saba and XVRHLDY for performances and collaborations. The following morning the crew jumped on the plane to New York City to play The Smokers Club holiday show with Joey Bada$$, Smoke DZA, G Herbo, Cousin Stizz, Statik Selektah and more Tuesday night at the Playstation Theatre in Manhattan.

Continuing on a year that hasn't seen them step on the brake often, Supa, Carl and Mulatto spent the few days before Christmas proving why they have asserted themselves at the forefront of the music that is being made on the ground floor of Chicago. Supa controlled the crowd, snapping every voice in the crowd to his falsetto choruses with relative ease, a testament to his ability to create clever hooks that permeate in spaces like Reggie's cavernous depths. Carl, at 19-years-old commands attention in a different way, calmly delivering his ethereal bars while wading into the crowd. What was a crazy abstract of a performance a year ago became a fluid, tightly-wound act this year and the show at Reggie's the other night proved just that. It was less a celebration that an affirmation of what's been done so far and a peek into what the trio will be able to achieve in the months and years to come. 

Having followed Hurt Everybody for awhile now behind the scenes, it is interesting to see them reach this point in their career. Stars are supposed to be beyond reach, not your friends and observing their rise through the ranks has been nothing short of revelatory. This most recent performance put a large rubber stamp on their claim to Chicago lore, one that won't be erased anytime soon. At this point, time will only tell as the group continues to progress into another year. While it never seemed obvious that these three would lead the next chapter of Chicago hip-hop, it's certainly looking to be that way from this 'DIY Band from Chicago'. Their play onstage this past Monday at Reggie's only served to underline that sentiment. 

Hurt Everybody's next Chicago show will be at Metro on Saturday, January 9th with Kirk Knight, Allan Kingdom,  Alex Wiley, and Logan with DJ sets from DJ Oreo and Sunny Woodz. More information can be found on our Events Calendar.
