Round Up • New Releases From Warhol.ss, Cory Rhymal, Roy French & More
Each week the These Days staff comes across great music from Chicago artists that we could not provide individual features for. In an effort to keep our readers up to date with more of our recent favorites, the Round Up segment provides quick summaries and additional noteworthy content. Check out our latest picks below and feel free to submit a comment if you feel we missed something.
Cory Rhymal • "The Proof" (Ft. Mick Jenkins)
Cory Rhymal, aka, The Red Eye Wised Guy, drops his first project this week called The Proof. With this project, Cory looked to work with like-minded individuals to deliver the truth to the people. One of those like-minded individuals Cory was able to grab was the one and only Mick Jenkins. Mick hopped on the title track and continued spreading the waters, the metaphor for truth. With beautiful concepts and great lyrical ability, Cory Rhymal will be bubbling in the city soon. Check out "The Proof" below
Mpulse • "52 Weeks"
Beat jack alert! In week 2 of his “52 Weeks” campaign, Chicago's very creative soul Mpulse hits us with a fire track titled “Jack Move”. This man isn’t on the microphone to play games and spit whack bars. This rap slanger is a hidden talent to say the least, spitting verses over the beats originally meant for artists such as Drake, Lil Uzi, French Montana and other popular jams from 2016. MPulse reinvents each beat with much thought and immense energy. I can confidently say that he is definitely one of the most underrated Chicago rappers out and should certainly be given more attention. Do yourself a favor and check out "52 Weeks" and keep up as we’ve still got 50 more weeks on the MPulse campaign…Lets go!
N.N.O. • 'No Nights Off Vol. 1'
About three weeks I was in Havana, Cuba meeting with some old friends and making some new ones. While there, per the happenstance of working in music in the country's smallest big city, one of the men I met had a son who did rap music here in Chicago. No matter how far you go, you can't escape the Chicago Renaissance. His son was ChadStar Taylor who, along with his group, N.N.O. debuted a new project his week on the heels of an inspired performance at the House of Blues last weekend.
A new name on the scene, Taylor is a product of Columbia College, arriving in the midwest via Buffalo, NY. The initial public offering from the contingent spans a large lexicon of sounds, pulling from both the group's past in musical growth and the contemporary influences in their peripheral. Still stepping out, there's certainly work to be done, but this first peek at this collective is one that shows prospective talent I'm sure we'll see again soon.
Roy French • "TYPE"
He doesn’t stop working, Roy French that is, hitting us with his latest R&B/Trap song titled “Type”. In this jam, Roy sings and raps his ass off over dope piano synths and snares. I hate to insinuate French is falling in love but who knows…it happens to the best of us! Both Roy and music producer Jay Flow certainly make a nice duo on this project, so stay locked for more jams from this Chicago favorite. Click below and enjoy!
Warhol.ss & Ran$ah • "Special"
Warhol could be one of the hardest working dudes in Chicago as of recent. After dropping his second project of the year Surprise, a 3-track EP, which was definitely a surprise, Warhol is back with a new single, Special. Warhol linked up with Ran$ah to drop fuego, over a Plu20 Nash production. There has been no slowing down for Warhol as he has been dropping music consistently and that's helping Warhol create a nice buzz around his name, Check out the song below.
Wave Chapelle • "Authentic"
These days it seems life’s just too short to be fake, leaving us with a second great option, which is being real and genuine. That being said, coming in hot with futuristic trap vibes is none other than Milwaukee notable Wave Chapelle. In his most recent drop titled “Authentic”, Wave doesn’t hold back on the mic, spitting the truth on his progression through the game as well as life as he sees it thus far. Much credit is also attributed to producer Maajei Vu, slapping the beat with clean bass drops, snares and chill melodies. If you’ve been keeping up with Wave Chappele, its evident he’s been locked in the studio cooking straight fire for his listeners. Click below and stay locked for more releases from Wave.
