Towkio's Pursuit Of The Stratosphere Is More Than A Marketing Campaign
Today, Towkio is going to space, so there’s that. He’s releasing his WWW project Friday, but the big reason is his stated goal of experiencing the concept that he built his album around, what called “The Overview Effect”. Above the earth, looking down and seeing it all, very literal interpretation of the word “perspective” strikes the viewer, allowing for a new understanding in how they perceive those around them. In other words, speck of dust interconnectedness is put into full view, and truths becomes unavoidable. The intention is to reach a cognitive shift - a fundamentally different way of thinking.
Towkio is going up with the help of an unnamed private company. He left at 11:11 AM today, from somewhere in Minnesota. His ride is a helium balloon, that’ll 100,000 feet in the air. From his terrifyingly high vantage point, Towkio will release, and listen to, WWW. Absorbing The Overview Effect, while taking in his interpretation of the effect while he was still earthbound. At a certain point, the helium balloon will pop, and Towkio will begin his descent. A similar stunt was performed by Felix Baumgartner via Red Bull, who established the longest free fall ever on his attempt. Towkio will be playing it safer though (thank goodness), and opting for a parachute attached to his capsule rather than skydiving it.
Needless to say, this is one of the more unique methods of promoting an album that we’ve seen. But joking aside, Towkio is searching for meaning and there’s reason to believe it can be found here. As he said to DJ Booth, “…it’s an out-of-body experience. They look back and see how precious it is because your life on Earth only exists on Earth. So all of the bullshit you deal with on a day-to-day basis, it instantly goes out the window when you leave the plane and you’re looking at the earth.” So yes, it's marketing, but Towkio is after something bigger than record sales. This is crazy. Good luck Towkio! You got this.
